Finding an area code

How do I find my area code from my ZIP code?

Enter the ZIP code above. A ZIP code sits inside one state, and area codes are assigned to regions of a state, so the lookup returns every area code assigned to that state. In a single-code state such as Alaska that is one answer; in Texas it is 29, of which only some reach any given ZIP.

Why isn't there one area code per ZIP code?

The two systems are unrelated. ZIP codes are postal delivery routes drawn by the USPS; area codes are telephone numbering plan areas drawn by NANPA around rate centers. Neither was designed to nest inside the other, and overlays make it worse — an overlaid region has two or more area codes covering the exact same ground.

Can I get the ZIP code for an area code?

Not as a single value, for the same reason. An area code spans many ZIP codes. What you can get is the list of cities and rate centers a code covers — every area code page lists them, along with the prefixes and carriers assigned to it.

What is a Canadian postal code's forward sortation area?

The first three characters — the M5H of M5H 2N2. That is the part that identifies the region, so the lookup above accepts either the full six characters or just those three.

Does an area code tell me where a caller is?

No. It tells you where the number was issued. Mobile numbers keep their area code when the owner moves, and number portability means a number can be carried to a different carrier in a different city. Reverse phone lookup explains what the underlying data can and cannot establish.

About ZIP and Postal Codes

ZIP codes (Zone Improvement Plan codes) were introduced by the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 1963. Each 5-digit ZIP code identifies a specific geographic delivery area, ranging from a single building in a dense city to an entire rural county.

Canadian postal codes use a 6-character alphanumeric format (e.g., M5H 2N2) where the first three characters identify the Forward Sortation Area (FSA) and the last three identify the Local Delivery Unit (LDU).

Each ZIP and postal code page on GeoDial includes the city name, state or province, time zone, IANA timezone identifier, and the telephone area codes that serve that region. Use the GeoDial tool to search for available phone numbers in any area code.
